(Note: The MTL Fortnight has just endeD in Term 3 Week 5. Looking Forward to the Next Special Event!)Mother Tongue Fortnight @ St. Stephen's begins in Term 3 Week 4, and this year's Theme is Traditional Food! Cuisine is the heart and soul of our heritage, the aromas that waft from our kitchens and hawker centres, the gastronomical language of our mother tongues.
Mother Tongue Fortnight 2020 @ St. Stephen's takes place amidst our fight against COVID, but we shall not be daunted. Our theme this year is Traditional Food, and how appropriate it is - much of what keeps everyone going during times of crisis is comfort food!
To us Singaporeans, the food of our childhood and our families are what define us as uniquely Singaporean. Perhaps the greatest Singaporean dish of all is the Rojak, and in that, there are all the different mother tongues' versions of it! Each of our constituent cultures has its own version of the Rojak, and we are made all the more richer in our Singaporean culture for it.
While English is our country's administrative language and connects us to the world of international business and science, our Mother Tongues connect us with our roots and cultures, the great Asian civilisations that our forefathers came from. Many years later, now, we continue to cherish that heritage even as we reinvent and fuse the traditional with the modern, and even combine the elements from our constituent cultures together!
SPECIAL EVENT PAST: 70th Anniversary of the declaration of St. John Baptist de La Salle as Patron Saint of Teachers
Dear Lasallians and Stephenians,
15 May 2020 is a special day for all of us as it marks the 70th Anniversary of the declaration of our founder St. John Baptist de La Salle as Patron Saint of Teachers.
Today we honour our founder’s life, work and mission as one Lasallian community. As we join our fellow Lasallian schools and friends from Singapore and around the world in marking this day, do visit the La Salle Singapore Facebook Page and watch the 70th Anniversary video there. Or, you could watch the video on the YouTube site itself - Link
Let us endeavor to lead a life of Faith, Service and Community, be men of integrity and men of service, so as to lift The Last, The Least and The Lost amongst us towards a better world, in every moment and every sense.
And, in the words of the last stanza and chorus of the anthem We Are Lasallians:
Today the need remains, for men like De La Salle
Continuing his mission
Working for the good of all
We are siblings to each other, across all walks of life
And we shall ever shine like stars through trial by fire and strife
We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands of earth we come
We share a dream, and sing with one voice
I am, you are, we are Lasallian
